Hands-on experience with mountain & climate science

Over the course of the program, you will be partnered with faculty, staff, and/or other students to collect data on organisms that range from alpine microbes to plants to pikas. You will also collect environmental data from equipment ranging from quadrats to eddy flux towers.

Some of the skills you’ll learn

Wilderness First Aid Training & Certification

During the first week up at the MRS, you will receive training from NOLS: the National Outdoor Leadership School. This training will cover everything you need to learn to be safe while working in montane wilderness environments. Wilderness first aid training will be a life-long valuable set of skills to help you be confident and capable in fieldwork settings.

Biodiversity sampling & ecological foundations

Learn how to observe and study birds, insects, small mammals, plants, soil, and more. At the end of four weeks, you’ll feel ready to launch your own biodiversity research program, whether you plan to work in montane habitats or not - these skills translate to many terrestrial environments.

Climate and weather instrumentation

What’s an eddy flux tower? You will find out by observing one first hand. These powerful instruments can measure all kinds of climatic and environmental variables that are used on long-term ecological monitoring projects.

Join us for our next field season

Our goal is to demystify the methods of field science and expose you to a wide range of tools that can be used in your dissertation research. We want to help you learn from others’ experiences and develop the skills necessary to thrive in science.
